March 2009
Well finally it has settled down after
one week of wind gusting to 30 and sea's up to eight foot, the month
of March is over.
Off shore the week of south east and
east wind should have blown every thing to our door, weed lines, color
lines and temp breaks, all the things that hold fish. Put the bally
hoo to work, start at the first break you find, slow down let your
baits swim. Should find some nice Dolphin and those pesky Sail fish
will make you wish that you brought more baits.
Surf anglers this is the month when the
bigger
Blue fish show and finally you can go the beach
and not be blown away. Cut bait and spoons will get their attention
and use a smaller hook, still plenty of Spanish Macs in the area. with
all the Pompano in the river should be plenty in the surf. The last
fish in numbers that was reported were at the beach access's north of
the power plant. Pompano like the cleaner water look for a color
change and fish that line. but with last report being a week old I
might start at Virginia Forest access and go north from there. Yes,
the beach is still a little cool for the Snook but then March is over.
The river anglers are still playing
with the Pompano from north to south, plenty of them on that yellow
jig. The east side of the river has been the location because of the
wind , well finally you can fish either side, the catch list is long
with every thing from Blue fish to Snook throw in a few Flounder come
on down and get a bait wet.

FISHING 3/21/09
Wind and more wind, it is written that March comes in like a lion and
leaves like a lamb, so where is the lamb? Off shore the first three days
of the week were less the comfortable but the next four were out of
control. These strong (nice way of saying GALE FORCE) winds will move the
gulf stream in and with it the weed lines and temp breaks that all hold
fish. When it lays down I would start looking in the 30' zone for the
Cobia and KIng fish, a sardine will catch both along with some excellent
Snapper, look north of the inlet, in front of the House of Refuge. This
is what happens when the wind blows and you have nothing to report you
start to give away your favored locations. Catch zones will move in, have
your baits in the water at 60'.
Surf anglers that were able to cast
four to six ounces put Blue fish, Spanish Mac's and Whiting on the beach.
Pompano were north of the Power Plant or just south of the House of
Refuge, good catches reported but no pattern to the time of the bite,
anglers just had to put in the time, sand fleas and clam strips were the
favored baits in these locations.
River anglers an always find a place to hide
from the wind and the best part was that the fish were there. Reports of
Trout, Reds, Pompano and more from the Indian River all the way up into
the North Fork have been excellent. Now is there is one group of anglers
that like these conditions, bridge anglers with big Snook in their sights.
With strong currents moving every thing around there is one fish that is
strong enough to take advantage of these conditions, big Snook. Big
currents, big baits, big fish please do not bring a knife to the gun
fight. These fish will all be above the slot, twenty pound tackle, fifty
pound leaders and you are ready, now you pick the bridge and hold on you
are about to be tested. Please release these fish as quickly as you can,
these are tomorrows fish stocks.

FISHING 3/15/09
Lets
go to the beach and catch a fish, you can
pick your time for the species. If you rise early that is the Blue fish time,
they like the cooler temps and they have made a strong showing all season.
Cut bait is preferred but spoons and big chuggers have been taking good
numbers. Now if you are a late riser, say 10:AM you can target the Whiting and
Croakers and do not for get the ice because you will need it. A strong bite
for the late morning angler, the edge has now warmed and the fish are at your
toes. Little pieces of shrimp on a number four long shank hook and a pitch of
the rod will put you in the zone. Pompano are on the move in and out, you may
find them with a long cast or a short pitch, no time selection for these fish.
This species has no pattern, so if you spend some time on the beach I am more
than sure you will take home more than one maybe even a limit catch (6 is the
bag). Now at any given time the Blue fish may come back and bite every thing
off, why, because they did not read this column.
Yes there is Pompano just about every
where for the river anglers, another species that did not read this column.
From the flats north of Little Mud, south to Herman's Bay, on to the causeways
and across the Sail Fish flats. Need more, well just go in the St. Lucie,
start at the cross roads through Hells Gate, under the dime bridge and go
north up to Club Med and that is a lot of Pompano. In the north fork the
favored bait is yellow jig, Hells Gate a yellow jig, in the Sail Fish flats a
yellow jig, from the bridges, you guess it a yellow jig, some with a
teaser hook and some with a piece of shrimp but the jig is the answer. I wish
I had an answer to the time but it seems the bite has been all day into
evening hours. So lets go catch a Pompano. Trout and Reds find a grass edge
early, using live shrimp or a three inch jerk bait worked slowly and be ready.
Bridge anglers, yes Pompano but there are other fish, like Snook for the
evening angler, Drum,Sheephead, Sand Perch, Snapper and a few I left out there
all day to keep you busy.
Off shore it was a little sporty but the
sun was shining and it was time to go. Deep is where the fish were hiding,
from 200' out, good bite of Wahoo for those that target the species. A few
Black Fin, they were thick in 800', the Dolphin bite was normal, here there
then no where and the Spanish Mac's also thinned out. perhaps the ground swell
earlier thinned the crowd, but they will be back. Small kings in thirty feet
north of our inlet feeding on the bait schools and a good Mutton bite
continues for the bottom anglers.
All and all it was a good week fishing
both inside and out, if you missed it there is still a few
Pompano.................................................HENRY
Finally the seas are starting to lay down, the
wind has slowed and temps have moderated. The Dolphin and Sails still
have no pattern but anglers are catching. This week most found their fish
from 80' to 150' trolling, a few on live baits but taking dinner to the
fish, you can find weeds and all the flotsam that you would miss just
drifting. Lots of small fish, a few gaffer size Dolphin but most were
small. The Kings were in the 30' zone both north and south of our inlet,
perfect size for the grill. As the seas and temp get into our normal
pattern so will the fish, yes they will get bigger. You pick a reef and
the Muttons have been there in good number, a few big ones but all were of
excellent size, sardines were the favored bait. Some time while you are
out there trolling around , you might want to drift over some of our
reefs, lots of really nice fish, that you have been missing.
Surf anglers it is all about the Blue fish, up
close and far out. These fish are three to five pounds and it seems they
are every where. All they do is eat, cut baits, spoons and top water are a
few of the favored baits. Pompano this week have been spotty, there just
not for very long and if you are not catching at your beach move north or
south and you will find them. Bite times vary from location to location
and clam strips were the favored bait this week. If Whiting were your
target sleep in see you about noon, let that surf get warm then come on
down, there has been plenty.
Big Trout and quality Reds are taking about
any thing you put in the water. It seems the Trout are every where, we
have had catches reported in the North River Shores area of the St. Lucie
River. Red Fish from Joe's Point north to the to Round Island, east bank
or west, just depending the day. Snook continue to hang at the bridges,
baits run deep are preferred and the dark hour have been most productive.
Plenty of Sheephead and Black Drum if you can keep the Sand Perch off your
baits. River fishing has been busy and yes the Pompano continue, catch the
last two hour of the incoming through the first two of the out going,
pompano like the deeper water, deeper cuts, plenty of them.
Now you know, go catch a
fish.....HENRY
3/1/09 Fishing
Let's go catch a big
Trout, five to ten pounds and throw in some Reds and Snook, that's a good
day. The area north of North bridge to Round island has been the location.
Live baits have been the answer, pin fish, shrimp or crabs. Time, know there
is the question. Trout, Red fish early. Snook low lights and just when things
are working in comes a school of Blue Fish and you move because they are not.
Good Trout bite in the Bear Point area, until the Blues show up and the seems
to be the case no mater the area or tide or time. Snook at any bridge, fish
the deeper area and fish on the bottom, if you can not feel the bottom you are
not in their zone. Flair Hawks, D.O.A TerrorEyz and deep diving plugs will
get you where you need to be. The dark hour is the most productive time but
that's when most anglers can go, they must eat in the day light hour, give it
a try. A good run of Black Drum at the bridges if you like Speck fishing you
will love the Sand Perch. These little guys have made a strong show from the
bridges, small but excellent on the table. Then the Pompano, we have had a
week of these fish, from the bridges, flats and surf these fish have been
every where, in coming water. Favored baits from the bridge Jigging spoons, in
the flats jigs with a bit of shrimp and from the beach it has been clam strips
but in coming water is a must.
On the surf it is all
about Blue fish and Pompano, just come on down if the Blues are not there the
pompano are so you will bring the ice because you will take some home.
Off shore with the wind
changing direction every day it has scattered the catch with no pattern. If
Dolphin and Sail fish are your target you will need to troll form 80' out to
125', slow let your baits swim. Plenty of Muttons on the reefs and that has
been the location of the Cobia, 60' to 80', put a good size pin fish on the
hook and hang on.
Till next week, go catch
a fish......Henry
