11/29/11 FISHING
Pesky Red Fish, it seems they are every where, all the places you don’t want them to be. Cross Roads, the area where Indian River and the St Lucie meet, a great location for the Pompano and usually it is, if the Red Fish are not there. Pompano, we waited all year, it is their time and we know it, just some body for got to tell the Red’s. We have the jigs, sand fleas and what ever else we need for the Pomp’s, and the pesky Red Fish love them all. More than one commercial angler has asked “what’s with all the Red’s”. At the bridges we could catch some Pompano if the Reds would leave the jigs alone and if that is not enough the Blues and Mac’s will come through and finish off your last jig. So go north to Herman’s Bay and Blind Creek these Pomp’s are always skipping in that area that is if the Reds don’t get your bait first. So look like you know what you are doing and go catch a Pesky Red Fish and may be as a by catch a Pompano will surprise you. Plenty of Trout, the season is closed, with a strong mix of Blues, Mac’s and Jacks to keep you busy, they eat about any thing you can through, wind is keeping us on the east side of the river. Bridges, drum, all of the above and after the sun goes down, Snook will over the slot but they will test your equipment, if the Blues don’t get it first.
Surf has been on and off, it is all about conditions. Surf has been blowing in and depends on the day if it is fish able. Blues on cut baits and spoons, with a mix of Jacks and Mac’s to keep you busy. Yes, there are sand fleas and yes there is Pompano you just have to get on the other side of the Blues, Mac’s and Jack’s to find them. If Pompano is your game catch the high tide, that tends to bring them in casting range, sand fleas and clam are the favored baits.
Off shore it is Sail Fish season and the tournaments have started, if those Pesky Dolphin will leave your bait alone. Anglers located the Sails from 80’ out if they can get away from those Pesky Dolphin; Trolled Bally Hoo has been the favored. The Dolphin bite has been excellent these fish are fifteen pound class and there has been plenty, just off shore conditions have testy at best. Plenty of Black Fins from 100’ and more Bonita that you can imagine. Sail fish anglers are not very happy, Pesky Dolphin rule. Spanish Mac’s are here strong as ever, one cast, one fish, and a little south of the inlet, green glass minnow jigs are the favored.
Till next week the fish are here, if we could turn off the wind weapon………………………Henry
FISHING 11/27/11
Well it was
one of those weeks, pretty in the middle then for the week end wind, no rain and lots of sun shine but the wind. For the off shore angler this is good as long as your heart is set on catching that Sail Fish, 3’ to 4’ and it does not look like it is slowing down, perfect for the Sails. River anglers it was on the east side of the river, the good thing was the fish in the flat water. Surf, well it was testy at best, every day was a 3oz or a 4oz day but plenty of Blue fish. So I will take the wind as long as the sun shines and the rain is limited to the early morning hours.Off shore it was a good bite one just needed the bigger boat, 200’ seems to be the zone trolling bally hoo and feathers. North of the inlet or south the start was that 200’ mark, Sails, lots of Dolphin and Black Fin Tuna kept anglers busy? Captain VJ Bell fishing south wanted Sails and found a few but the thirty Dolphin took a lot of time, Phil Philips fishing north found a few Dolphin and to many Sails, I believe the fish know what you are looking for. Black Fins were small but tasty and the Spanish Mac’s were in numbers at the Hole. Well if you could deal with the 3’ to 5’ seas fishing was pretty good, me I will have to wait.
Surf anglers need that side cast this week, if you casted to high the wind would blow it back or down the beach. Most were casting spoons, Blues, Mac’s and Jacks made the catch list with a few Pompano and it was very few. The first three were in close, 1 ½ oz spoon would put you where you needed to be, Pompano were a little deeper and just out of reach. Now if we could just turn off this wind or how about a west wind that would put the Pompano in the game, they are just on the other side of the Blues, no body wants to hang with the Blue Fish. Cut baits work, just use a smaller hook 2/0 long shank is perfect, the Mac’s have a smaller mouth and they can get your bait but not the hook.
East bank of the Indian River was the location for plenty of Reds, Trout; Lady’s and yes pesky Blues and some of big Mac’s. Trout season is closed, they will hit any thing, Lady Fish dance and jump a lot, Blues and Mac’s will eat any thing that moves and after you sort through them it is the Red Fish. Lots of reports on lots of fish, from the pier in front of the House of Refuge all the way to Bear Point, slot Reds. Two feet of water, preferred treed shore line but not necessary and the cool part was it was all day. Red Fish limit is one, 18 to 27” and most are in the top of the slot, fish the Flat water and slow the retrieve. Bridges were busy, Drum, Sheepshead, Blues, Mac’s, Jacks, and some of the biggest Ribbon fish I have seen in years. Pompano, in and out and those that were in were small, still plenty of Snook after sun down, Flair Hawks has been the preferred bait this week.
Till next week, please turn off the “WIND WEAPON”………………….Henry
FISHING 11/20/2011
Surf anglers had a few days that were fishable and a few day that were not, but plenty of fish. The Blues have arrived along with the Mac’s and have made for some good fishing. Anglers casting spoons had plenty of takers. Anglers casting cut bait had plenty of takers also; you just had to find their zone. Casting a spoon you cover the area, cut bait you have to pay attention. Cast out your bait and give it some time then move it in, once you get the strike you have to cast back to that area that is the zone. Plenty of Jacks and yes there were some pompano, but for them you needed to spend a lot of time finding their zone. Pompano have been there early and late but not for very long, they have been on the move. Anglers pay attention to the way they are moving and you move the same direction, north or south just get ahead of them. Favored bait has been sand fleas, anything else the Blues and Mac’s will eat so stick with the fleas. Now if we just can get a few days in with out the big surf of weed mats we can have a fish fry.
Wind has kept most anglers on the east side of the river, great Trout bite they know the season is closed but the Red Fish bite has been as strong. From Nettles Island north to Round island lots of Red Fish.
The Spoils north of North Bridge provide shelter from the wind and some excellent conditions for the Reds.
From Bear Point south to Nettles, lots of Reds, best part is they are chewing, live baits soft rubber and spoons all are getting attention. Problem, Blues, Mac’s, Jacks and Lady fish are all there and just as hungry so bring some extra baits you will use them. Pompano in the Sail Fish Flat and at the bridges, not a lot but still enough to keep your attention, no special time you just have to be there. Snook anglers do not mind the wind and busy water, Flair Hawks all week in the low light, plenty of fish, just a few in the slot.
Black Fins at the Hill and a few Dolphin, Sails in 80’ on out to 130’ with a mix of a few Dolphins and to the south more Dolphins, small but there. It has been a scattered week with big seas, so not too many anglers were comfortable going out, this is the time when you say “I need a bigger boat”. But when going to the fuel pump, I’ll keep my boat and wait for better weather. Till next week will some body please turn off the wind weapon……………………………Henry
FISHING 11/14/11
We are all tired of this wind and less than polite seas, let’s think positive and go catch a fish. With the seas settling to 4.6’ it is all most like summer and the fish are biting. Off shore it has been Dolphin, lots of Dolphin from 200’ out on the color lines. Trolling bally hoo has been the favored baits, fishing the light blue side than trailing back on the dark side but you have to pay attention. Waves have been changing quickly so if it is a small boat, know your crew. Big boats, put a top on your cup and go, the catch list included Sails, a few Kings, two Wahoo and a Cobia, not many anglers but a good bite of fish. Nothing to report for the bottom anglers, conditions just did not fit, the big water kept the fish safe and the anglers not to happy.
Surf it has been Blues, Mac’s and a few Pompano but then the seas have kept the beach less than favored. Big surf has caused a lot of turbid water and weeds making it almost impossible. Forecast is to quiet down and it will take a tidal changes to let the sand settle but the Blues are here and mix them with the Mac’s and we will be back to normal, lost of rod benders. Casting a spoon or cut baits will get the attention we are looking for. Pompano for the long casters using sand fleas and clam, Whiting and Croakers not sure how or when, what with all the Blues in the area. Plenty of Jacks and a few Snook so don’t walk away from that rod; they will take it home with them. Now if we can just get the weeds to leave.
Pompano in the crossroads, the channel from the St. Lucie to the Indian River at the base of Sewall’s Point, north across the Sail Fish Flats and yes they took some home from the bridges. Red fish have been strong in the area, shallow is where they are hiding. East side in the flat water but just as many has been caught on the west side of the river, watch the birds working that churned up water. Trout season is closed till January so they are eating everything, quick release will keep them healthy. Plenty of Blues and Jacks to keep you busy, hard baits are better idea than soft rubber. Snook anglers have been the happy group, the stronger the weather the better the bite, let the sun go down and pick a bridge, they feed face into the current. In spite of the weather fishing has been pretty good both inside and out with a long catch list, now Monday and we will be back to work and the weather will be perfect, I love Florida……………HENRY
